These probiotics reduce atopic dermatitis
In addition to supplements with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D and a healthier diet with fewer refined grains and more vegetables, probiotics can also help reduce atopic dermatitis or eczema. This is suggested by a meta-study published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition.
Study
In 2022, Indonesian dermatologists affiliated with the Universitas Airlangga published a meta-analysis of 6 previously published trials in which patients with mild to moderate eczema received probiotics. A total of 241 patients participated in the trials as subjects.
The Indonesians aggregated and reanalyzed the data from the studies.
Results
In 3 of the 6 studies, researchers assessed the effect of supplementation with probiotics using the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD), which contains objective elements that dermatologists determine, but also subjective elements that eczema patients themselves report.
The maximum score is 100, the lowest 0.
Supplementation with probiotics reduced the score by an average of 8 points. This amounts to a decrease of 8 percent.

In the 3 studies, subjects received a daily supplement with proven probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius or Bifidobacterium breve for 8-16 weeks.
Supplementation with probiotics also improved the quality of life of the test subjects.
Mechanism
The meta-study could find no effect on the cytokines like interferon-gamma or interleukin-4 that control the immune system and can stimulate or inhibit autoimmune reactions. The researchers therefore suspect that probiotics do something in the intestines in people with eczema. They speculate that probiotics make the intestinal wall healthier. This makes it harder for substances that trigger eczema to enter the body.
Conclusion
"Probiotics can be used as adjuvant treatment of adult atopic dermatitis," the researchers conclude.
