Collagen hydrolyzate as a skin rejuvenator | The most effective dose is surprisingly low
Hydrolyzed collagen is a proven cosmeceutical. When it comes to products that keep skin young and healthy, collagen is perhaps the most thoroughly studied supplement. Moreover, according to a Japanese animal study, the effective dose is surprisingly low.
Study
Mice in a control group were not irradiated but also did not receive collagen hydrolyzate. Animals in yet another control group were irradiated, but also did not receive collagen hydrolyzate.
Exposure to high doses of ultraviolet light accelerates skin aging. Substances that keep the skin healthy during exposure to powerful ultraviolet light are also likely to protect against skin aging.
Results
Damaged skin cannot properly prevent the loss of water from the body. When the skin is damaged, transepidermal water loss [TEWL] increases. The figure above shows that collagen hydrolyzate in the most modest doses protected against this - and the higher doses did not.
According to the Japanese, the human equivalent of the most effective dose of collagen hydrolyzate, for someone weighing 60 kilos, is 1.2 grams per day.
