This combination of astaxanthin and collagen keeps your skin young
A daily dose of 6 milligrams of astaxanthin reduces facial wrinkles, we wrote two weeks ago. And there is some evidence that hydrolyzed collagen has the same effect. What would happen if you combined astaxanthin and collagen? A human study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2014, provides the answer.
Study
The collagen was a product of Rousselot, France, which markets hydrolysed fish collagen under the name Peptan. The astaxanthin came from the factories of the American Cyanotech Corporation.
Results
After 12 weeks, the researchers irradiated a piece of skin on the women's buttocks with UV light. UV radiation is the main cause of skin aging.
The Koreans discovered that the skin of the women who had received the supplement responded to the radiation by producing significantly more pro-collagen type 1. This means that the skin tissue renewed itself.
In addition, the skin cells of the women taking the supplement produced less of the enzymes MMP-1 and MMP-12. These enzymes are involved in catabolic processes in skin tissues.
