High intake of vitamin B3 may make you live longer
If heart patients consume a relatively large amount of vitamin B3 every day, their risk of death is lower than if their intake is on the low side. A high intake of vitamin B3 specifically reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in this group.
Study
The researchers were able to follow the heart patients over time for several years and had an idea of their diet.
1659 study participants died during the study. 790 deaths were due to cardiovascular disease.
Because cardiologists have used high-dose vitamin B3 supplements as medicine with some success, the researchers wondered whether dietary vitamin B3 is a factor in patients' chances of survival.
Results
The study participants with the highest intake were also 33 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease. This association also survived the removal of other factors.
The table below tells you this. Click on it for a larger version.
To give you an idea of how many people consume more than 26.9 milligrams of vitamin B3 per day, we consulted a memo from the Dutch research institute RIVM that we found on the web. It dates from 2018. [Link]
According to RIVM, more than half of Dutch men have a vitamin B3 intake of less than 26.6 milligrams per day. 95 percent of Dutch women do not achieve this intake.
Vitamin B12
Among study participants who consumed more than 3.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily, a relatively high intake of vitamin B3 reduced the risk of death by as much as 48 percent.
In the RIVM memo we see that only a few percent of Dutch men do not reach that 3.4 micrograms. However, this is the case for more than a quarter of Dutch women.
