Tiny dose of piceatannol improves dermal health | Trial

Are skinceutical formulas which that contain both piceatannol and pinitol promising? This question has occupied us for quite some time now. Today we read the report of a Japanese trial, which makes us even more inclined to answer this question positively.

Tiny dose of piceatannol improves dermal health | Trial

Study
In the 1910s, the Japanese Morinaga group published research into the positive effects of passion fruit extracts on the skin. The main active substance in those extracts is piceatannol, a metabolite of resveratrol. The trial we are talking about today also comes from Morinaga. So we consider it sponsored.

Researchers from Morinaga's R&D department divided 32 women aged 35-54 into 2 groups. For 8 weeks, the women in one group took a placebo every day, while the women in the other group took 2 capsules with a passion fruit extract every day. The capsules provided 5 milligrams of piceatannol daily.

Results
Supplementation with a modest dose of piceatannol [PFSE] had no effect on wrinkles, softness or elasticity of the skin, but did increase the amount of moisture in the skin.

Side effects
The women in the supplementation group reported that the supplement made them feel less tired and sweat less. The table above tells us that. Click on it for a larger version.

30 milligrams per day
It is striking that such a tiny amount of piceatannol still has such a visible effect. That is why we wonder what happens if you give test subjects a multiple of that dose.

Morinaga tested larger doses of piceatannol in a trial that was published in 2018 in Japanese Pharmacology and Therapeutics. [Japanese Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 2018 Jan;46(7):1191-9.]

We have not been able to find the full text of this study and have to make do with an abstract. It states that the skin of test subjects who received a functional food containing 10 milligrams of piceatannol 3 times a day not only became less elastic, but also more elastic. This indicates increased collagen production.

Collagen hydrolyzate as a skin rejuvenator | The most effective dose is surprisingly low
When it comes to products that keep skin young and healthy, collagen is perhaps the most thoroughly studied supplement.

Into sunbathing? Fish oil protects your skin
Fish oil probably therefore reduces the chance of skin cancer and may also retard the speed at which your skin ages.

How propolis blocks skin aging
Supplementation with propolis, the waxy substance with which bees build their nests, can slow down skin aging.
