Pinitol protects the skin against UV light (and possibly slows down skin aging)
Supplementing with pinitol not only increases insulin sensitivity, but may also protect the skin against the harmful effects of too much sunlight. Because excessive exposure to UV light is a driver of skin aging, pinitol may also slow down skin aging.
Study
In 2024, South Korean researchers affiliated with cosmetics Amorepacific Corporation published an in vitro study in Biomolecules & Therapeutics in which they exposed human skin cells - more precisely: human dermal fibroblasts - to UV light and pinitol. The Amorepacific Corporation produces cosmetics.
Results
The Koreans made the cells grow into tissue - and then damaged it. So they imitated a wound. While exposing the tissue to UVB light, they measured over 24 hours how many cells traveled to the wound to repair the damage.
You can see below that UVB-light slowed down that process, but not when the Koreans exposed the cells to pinitol at a concentration of 10 micromoles.
Mechanism
Pinitol increased the activity of genes that stimulate skin cells to produce collagen and inhibited the activity of genes that break down collagen.
Pinitol did not reduce the direct free radical effect of UVB light.
Conclusion
"Pinitol can be a potential therapeutic agent for preventing skin damage or improving UV-induced skin damage", the Koreans summarize.
