In this animal study, D-pinitol prevents and inhibits cancer
We have been boring our three readers for quite some time now with the insulin-like effect of D-pinitol, an analogue of inositol found in beans. Because we do have a rudimentary form of empathy, despite our nerdy mindset, we know that our readers crave something different. So today we read an animal study in which D-pinitol prevented and slowed breast cancer.
Study
Rats in a control group did not receive DMBA.
For 13 weeks after DMBA administration, half of the rats in both groups received a large oral dose of D-pinitol daily. If the rats had been adult humans, they would have been given about 2 grams of D-pinitol daily.
Results
If the rats were given both DMBA and D-pinitol, tumors developed in only 40 percent of the animals. The tumors in the DMBA + D-pinitol group were also a significant 31 percent smaller than the tumors in the DMBA group.
Mechanism
Conclusion
"Also, the evidence provided strongly supports the ability of D-pinitol to inhibit diverse events involved in tumor progression and clearly proves its usefulness in the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases."
"Additional work needs to be done to completely translate the observed preclinical findings with this important dietary agent using well-designed human clinical trials."
