Do you want to live longer? Use more than 3 tablespoons of olive oil per day
A relatively high intake of olive oil reduces the risk of premature death for people over 35. Olive oil protects against both fatal cardiovascular diseases and deadly cancers. This is suggested by an Italian epidemiological study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Study
22,892 people over 35 participated in the study. When the study began, these participants had completed questionnaires about their lifestyle habits - including their olive oil intake. The researchers then looked at when which study participants died - and from what.
Results
Click on the figure above for a larger version.
A relatively high intake of olive oil reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease as well as death from cancer. The figure below shows the relationship between olive oil intake and the risk of death from cancer. Intake of more than 3 tablespoons of olive oil per day reduced the risk of cancer by 23 percent compared to an intake of less than 1.5 tablespoons per day.
Conclusion
"The maximum benefit was observed at intakes higher than three tablespoons per day which correspond to approximately > 30 grams of olive oil per day."
