This daily amount of olive oil may extend your lifespan
Using olive oil in cooking reduces your risk of dying over the next 18 years by more than 30 percent. According to Spanish epidemiologists, if you consume 2 tablespoons of olive oil daily, you are doing well.
Study
In 2022, researchers from the Universidad Miguel Hernández published a study in Frontiers in Nutrition in which 1,567 adult Spaniards participated. The researchers measured how much olive oil the study participants consumed daily for a week and then monitored them closely for 18 years.
Results
After brushing out the effect of lifestyle factors as best as possible with statistical methods, the researchers found that during the study, participants who consumed 2 or more tablespoons of olive oil daily were 31 percent less likely to die than participants who did not consume olive oil.
With an intake of at least 2 tablespoons per day, olive oil reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer by 46 and 51 percent respectively.

Bioactive substances
Olive oil contains the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid and vitamin E. According to animal studies, both substances may extend lifespan.
In addition, the researchers suspect that phenols in olive oil such as tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein may also play a role. These substances may protect blood vessels and inhibit inflammation and tumors.
