Combination of exercise with high vitamin D levels slows down aging
Exercise slows down aging. This effect is greater if there is also a relatively large amount of vitamin D in the blood. This is evident from a study that recently appeared in Redox Biology. We received it from an attentive (and in many aspects well-informed) reader.
Study
The study participants had answered questions about their exercise patterns, so that the researchers could divide them into a group that hardly moved at all [NO PA] and a group that moved regularly [PA].
The researchers also had access to the results of blood tests of the study participants. The Chinese not only knew the concentration of vitamin D in the blood of the study participants, but also nine values that together said something about a person's biological age. These were "albumin, creatinine, glucose, C-reactive protein, lymphocyte percent, mean cell volume, red blood cell distribution width, alkaline phosphatase, and white blood cell count".
Based on those nine values, the researchers calculated the biological age of the study participants. They then determined whether the study participants were biologically aging faster than normal.
Results
The typical study participant who exercised and had a high vitamin D level was therefore 1.3 years younger than a typical study participant who did not exercise and had a low vitamin D level.
