Half a gram of vitamin C makes your immune system decades younger

If there is ever an outbreak of a new virus that enthusiastically solves the problem of high house prices, people over 70 will be at a disadvantage. Their immune system works less well than that of younger individuals. Daily supplementation with half a gram of vitamin C largely solves that problem.

Study
Spanish physiologists, affiliated with Complutense University of Madrid, took blood from healthy young people in their thirties [AC] and from a group of older people in their seventies. The Spaniards collected a blood sample three times from the latter group. There was a period of 3 months between the first collection [BS] and the second [S], during which the subjects took 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily.

After the second blood draw, the researchers waited another 6 months and then took a third sample [PS].

The Spaniards gave another group of people in their seventies, in addition to vitamin C, also vitamin E. The effects of that combination were virtually identical to those of supplementation with vitamin C alone. We therefore leave that part of the research aside in the report.

Results
Supplementation with vitamin C made neutrophilic granulocytes - the cells of the learning immune system that mainly attack and consume bacteria - more sensitive to biochemical signals that tell them to get to work [Chemotaxis]. Supplementation also ensured that they actually consumed foreign pathogens more often [Phagocytosis].

The people in their seventies had a less good immune system than those in their thirties, but supplementation with vitamin C brought the immune system of the people in their seventies back to the level of those in their thirties.

The researchers also looked at the lymphocytes. These are the white blood cells, which include the T cells, B cells and Natural Killer cells.

T cells clear away affected cells by attaching themselves to them and pumping those cells full of aggressive substances. B cells produce antibodies that attach to viruses and suspicious cells - then instruct other immune cells to disable them. Natural Killer cells eliminate anything unusual, even before the learning part of the immune system is active.

Vitamin C stimulated the development of lymphocytes into mature immune cell types [Proliferation].

Finally, vitamin C also made the Natural Killer cells more active.

Six months after the test subjects had taken their last dose of vitamin C, their immune systems were still better in some respects than before the supplementation started.

Conclusion
"Thus, a short period of vitamin C [...], with the doses used, improves the immune function in elderly men and women and could contribute to a healthy longevity," the Spaniards summarize.
