Infected with corona? You need more vitamin C
If you consume a substantial amount of vitamin C every day, you could be protected against the negative impact of a corona infection.
Study 1
Teresa Maria Tomasa-Irriguible and Lara Bielsa-Berrocal, both affiliated with the Autonoma de Barcelona University in Spain, determined the concentration of vitamin C in the blood of 67 seriously ill corona patients. [Nutr J. 2021 Jul 9;20(1):66.] About three quarters of them had to be ventilated.
64.2 percent of the study participants had a low vitamin C level of 0.1 to 0.4 milligrams per deciliter, in 17.9 percent of the study participants the vitamin C level was so low that the researchers could no longer determine it.
Study 2
The reason the researchers decided to conduct their research was another publication from Barcelona scientists. [Crit Care. 2020 Aug 26;24(1):522.] This study was published a year earlier, in 2020. In that article, researchers from Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus said they had determined the vitamin C status of 18 critically ill corona patients.
In that study, 1 study participant had a low vitamin C level of 0.2 milligrams per deciliter, 16 study participants had a vitamin C level that was so low that the researchers could not determine it.
Mechanism
The researchers suspect that a corona infection stimulates so much free radical activity that the vitamin C pool in the body decreases. Because vitamin C inhibits inflammation and reduces the penetration of viruses into tissues, the severity of the disease increases.
