Supplement with vitamin D reduces pain in rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatic patients can reduce the pain in their joints by several tens of percent if they take vitamin D supplements. Astronomical dosages are not necessary.

Study 1 | Mega dose
In 2019, Dibyendu Mukherjee published a trial in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care in which he experimented with 150 subjects in a relatively early group of rheumatism. [J Family Med Prim Care. 2019 Feb;8(2):517-22.] The subjects had not been treated at a rheumatism clinic for more than 2 years. They did not receive corticosteroids, but they received standard treatment. [sciencedaily.com October 27, 2013]

The subjects also used NSAIDs if necessary to control the pain. Their NSAIDs use was stable.

During the 8 weeks that the trial lasted, the subjects in the control group took a daily supplement containing 1 gram of calcium. The subjects in the experimental group did the same, but they also took a weekly supplement that supplied 60,000 vitamin IU or 8,500 micrograms of D3. This is a very high dose, which you should not take without medical supervision.

Slightly more than 30 percent of the subjects were vitamin D deficient. In the case of this study, that means that their vitamin D level was lower than 20 nanograms per milliliter. That is the same as 50 nanomoles per litre.

In the control group, pain was reduced by 30 percent. In the vitamin D group, pain was reduced by 80 percent, which is 50 percent more.

Study 2 | Modest dose
Mukherjee gave his test subjects a very high dose. In 2011, Kiran Gopinath and Debashish Danda, 2 rheumatologists from Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, published another trial in which a similar group of people with an early stage of rheumatism were given vitamin D supplements.

Gopinath and Danda's trial was similar to Mukherjee's in almost everything, but there were some differences. No less than 68 percent of the subjects in the Gopinath and Danda trial were vitamin D deficient, the trial lasted 3 months and the subjects in the experimental group took 500 IE or 12.5 micrograms of vitamin D3 daily.

In the control group, pain was reduced by 30 percent. In the experimental group, pain was reduced by 50 percent.

Vitamin D supplement accelerates recovery after concussion
If your vitamin D level is on the low side, after a severe blow to your head your brain will recover faster if you take a vitamin D supplement.

Do you need extra vitamin D if you are already supplementing with fish oil?
"Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel also contain a lot of vitamin D3. I don't eat that every day, but I do take my fish oil capsules faithfully. Do I still need a vitamin D supplement?"
