Afraid of scars? Decrease your intake of omega-6s while increasing your intake of omega-3s
Whether you will develop unsightly scars after surgeries or injuries may depend on your intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. This is suggested by an older and small epidemiological study that appeared in PLEFA in 2000.
Study
Researchers from South Africa's Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein studied the diets of 10 native and young South Africans with scars severe enough to require surgical removal. The researchers then compared these dietary diets with those of 80 comparable South Africans without scars.
Results
The most striking difference between the two groups was in the intake of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The diet of the scar group [Keloids] provided considerably more omega-6 fatty acids than is healthy according to scientists and at the same time too few omega-3 fatty acids.
In the control group [Controls], the intake of omega-6 fatty acids was within the limits. The level of omega-3 fatty acids could have been slightly higher, but it was higher than in the control group.
When the researchers looked in the blood of the test subjects for fatty acids that were contained in a phospholipid, the researchers mainly found more GLA and less ALA in the scar group than in the control group.
Mechanism
"Excessive arachidonic acid (and linoleic acid for conversion to arachidonic acid) is associated with inflammatory conditions and tumourigenesis", write the researchers.
"Extensive research showed that collagen overproduction in keloids can be downregulated by PGE2, cytokines and growth factors during signal transduction and mRNA transcription and translation at nuclear level."
