After menopause, a daily teaspoon of pumpkin seed oil makes women healthier
Post-menopausal women become healthier and feel better if they consume a little pumpkin seed oil daily. According to a 2011 study, 2 grams per day is sufficient. That's a small teaspoon.
Study
The researchers divided the women into 2 groups. One group took 2 grams of oil from pumpkin seeds every day for 12 weeks. If you use supplements, this usually amounts to 2-4 capsules per day. If you use oil from a bottle, it is a modest teaspoon. This was the experimental group. [PSO]
The women in the control group took wheat germ oil. [WHO]
Results
However, according to statistical tests, those effects were not overwhelming, according to the table below. Click on it for a larger version.
The shifts in the experimental group were statistically significant. However, this did not apply to the differences between the control and experimental groups after 12 weeks of supplementation. How you interpret such a result in these types of studies depends in practice on your mood at the time.
When the 12 weeks were over, the total severity of menopausal symptom score in the experimental group had improved. In this group, the women reported less pain in their joints, fewer headaches and fewer hot flashes. Once again the effects were less than stellar.
Lignans
Other potential active substances in pumpkin seed oil are polyunsaturated fatty acids, sterols and carotenoids. [Plants (Basel). 2022 May 24;11(11):1394.]
