Obese with a fatty liver? This dose of myo-inositol makes you healthier
Supplementation with 4 grams of myo-inositol per day may make obese people healthier. Their cholesterol improves, their insulin sensitivity increases, blood pressure decreases and body weight decreases. In addition, their liver will function better.
Inositol
The exact biological function of inositol in the body is not yet fully known, but we do know from basic research that cells attach inositol to phosphate groups. These complexes then act as second messengers. This means that they transmit the signals of a variety of hormones, growth factors and neurotransmitter to the information molecules in the cell nucleus. By increasing inositol intake, cells become more responsive to hormones like testosterone, nor-epinephrine and insuline.
Study
Half of the subjects took 2 grams of myo-inositol twice a day. They were given sachets of powder that they had to dissolve in a glass of water. They drank that during lunch or dinner. So in total they consumed 4 grams of myo-inositol per day.
The subjects in the placebo group did the same. Their sachets did not contain myo-inositol, but maltodextrin.
Results
Systolic blood pressure decreased by 4 points in the experimental group, while it did not change significantly in the placebo group. Diastolic blood pressure decreased by 9 points on supplementation, while diastole in the placebo group did not change significantly.
Supplementation improved cholesterol and insulin balance. In the experimental group, triglycerides, LDL and HDL and insulin sensitivity improved.
At the same time, some liver enzyme values improved in the supplementation group. This suggests that myo-inositol supplementation helps the liver function better.
Conclusion
"Because of the limited number of randomized controlled trial in humans, further clinical trials with larger sample sizes, longer duration, different myo-inositol doses, and other inositol derivatives are recommended."
