More muscle strength, less fat mass due to a few grams of chlorella per day, animal study
If you take a few grams of chlorella every day, you will become stronger and your fat mass will decrease. That is, if you react as well to chlorella as the lab rats with which the Malaysian biochemist Nurhazirah Zainul Azlan experimented.
Study
If the rats had been adult humans, they would have received 1700-3500 milligrams of chlorella daily.
The researchers didn't use a commercial product, but a chlorella powder that came from fellow researchers. The were not paid by a producer of chlorella supplements, but by their university and the Malaysian government.
Results
Chlorella supplementation had no appreciable positive effect on the lean body mass of the experimental animals, but it reduced the fat mass in both the young and old rats.
The researchers were unable to determine how exactly chlorella made the rats stronger and slimmer. They did discover that supplementation with micro-algae reduced the concentration of creatine kinase. This indicates a decrease in muscle damage.
Chlorella reduced the production of inflammatory factors such as isoprostane, just like the concentration of MDA. The latter strongly suggests an antioxidant effect.
Conclusions
"These effects could be due to its antioxidant properties and its ability to ameliorate oxidative stress."
"This finding may indicate its potential in reducing the severity of sarcopenia and may also be beneficial for other age-related muscular atrophy conditions and other muscular diseases."
