Physical activity in the evening in particular enhances insulin sensitivity
When it comes to health and longevity, forms of exercise such as fitness, running and cycling are more effective if you exercise in the evening. We wrote that the day before yesterday. This may be because physical activity in the evening in particular improves insulin sensitivity.
Study
The researchers determined the exercise pattern of the study participants. In their study, which was published in Diabetologia in 2023, they used statistics to remove the effect of the total amount of moderate-intensity and intensive exercise. The researchers also did this with sitting behavior. Instead, they focused on the time of day when the study participants were physically active. The Dutch then looked for an association between the exercise pattern and sensitivity to insulin.
Results
Black squares = moderate to vigorous physical activity spread throughout the day, orange triangles = moderate to vigorous physical activity concentrated in the morning, green diamonds = moderate to vigorous physical activity concentrated in the afternoon, blue dots = moderate to vigorous physical activity concentrated in the evening.
The study participants who exercised mainly in the evening were 25 percent less insulin resistant than the study participants who spread their moderate-intensity and intensive exercise over the day.
Conclusion
"Further studies should assess whether timing of physical activity is indeed important for the occurrence of type 2 diabetes, taking into account the influence of chronotype."
