A daily tablespoon of ground linseed powder reduces menopause symptoms

Women with severe menopausal complaints can almost halve their problems if they take 10 grams of ground linseed powder every day. This is evident from a trial published in Cureus.

Study
Researchers from King Georges Medical University in India divided 123 women aged 40-55, all of whom reported menopausal symptoms, into 2 groups. For 3 months, the women in the experimental group consumed 10 grams of ground flaxseed powder daily, while the women in the control group consumed 10 grams of roasted wheat powder daily.

10 grams of linseed powder is equal to one tablespoon of linseed powder.

Lignans
Flaxseed contains fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, proteins and lignans such as secoisolariciresinol. In the body, microorganisms and enzymes convert secoisolariciresinol into enterodiol and enterolactone. These two substances have a weak estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effect.

Some endocrinologists suspect that enterodiol and enterolactone can alleviate menopausal symptoms and counteract the negative cardiovascular effects of the loss of estradiol production.

Results
The researchers had their subjects complete the modified Kupperman's questionnaire just before and on the last day of the supplementation period. Doctors use this to determine the severity of menopausal complaints.

The higher you score on the questionnaire, the more serious your complaints are. Total scores from 0-6: no complaints, total scores from 7-15: mild complaints, total scores from 16-30: moderate complaints, total scores from 30-63: severe complaints.

Supplementation with linseed changed the complaints from 'severe' to 'moderate'.

Supplementation with linseed increased the concentration of enterodiol and enterolactone in the blood of the test subjects.

Conclusion
"To confirm and build on the promising results of our study, additional investigation is necessary, including testing other doses and evaluating additional neuroendocrine, metabolic, and related gene expression markers with perimenopausal syndrome", the researchers summarize.

That will be quite a job, but according to the researchers the end result will be worth it. "A novel strategy for treating perimenopausal syndrome patients without side effects will be developed, improving their quality of life."

Strength training keeps women in better shape than HRT
As women reach the menopause, and their bodies produce less of hormones like estradiol and progesterone, they often lose muscle mass and start to build up fat reserves around their waist.

13-OXO-ODA, esculeoside-A and GABA in tomato juice reduce menopause symptoms
Two glasses daily of tomato juice can help middle-aged women have fewer menopausal symptoms, feel better about themselves, and keep their weight steady.

Beta-alanine against hot flashes
Readers of this web magazine probably already know that beta-alanine is not only interesting for athletes, but also has broader applications.
