Collagen supplement makes worn joints less stiff and painful
If you suffer from worn-out joints, collagen supplementation can make life a little more bearable. A daily dose of collagen makes joints less stiff and less painful, concludes a meta-study published in International Orthopaedics in 2018.
Study
In 3 of the 5 trials, subjects were given hydrolyzed collagen, usually in a dose of 10 grams per day. In the remaining trials, subjects were given collagen in the form of peptides or undenatured type II collagen.
The trials lasted 10 to 48 weeks.
More details about the trials are given in the table below. Click on it for a larger version.
Results
The WOMAC questionnaire looks at multiple aspects. Collagen supplementation significantly improved joint stiffness scores. You can see this above.
Another part of the questionnaire involves subjects having to indicate on a 10-centimeter line how much pain they have in the worn joint [VAS]. You can see below that supplementation reduced that pain by about 2 centimeters.
