1950 | After a myocardial infarction, megadoses of choline keep heart patients alive
Earlier this month we wrote about the forgotten research of the American cardiologist Lester Morrison, who discovered in the second half of the last century that supplementation with a few grams of chondroitin per day significantly reduced the risk of death in heart patients. The same Lester Morrison achieved similar results with good old choline.
Choline
The 115 patients in the experimental group received a dose of choline bicarbonate [structural formula above] every day for 1, 2 or 3 years. The daily doses ranged from 6 to 32 grams per day.
These are significant amounts. Nutritionists at the American Institute of Medicine estimate that adults need 425-500 milligrams of choline daily. The best dietary sources are animal foods, such as eggs, chicken, beef and fish, but choline is also found in nuts, vegetables and grains.
With an intake of more than 6-8 grams per day, people can get a fishy body odor or become nauseous. In practice, the response to megadoses of choline varies from individual to individual. Some people can take tens of grams every day without a penny of pain, while other people feel nauseous and sick.
