Yogurt is a longevity food

The history of scientific interest in probiotics began with the search for life extension. Because of that search, yogurt is now in every supermarket. Yogurt is the most successful probiotic food in Western countries. And according to a Chinese-American study, yogurt may indeed extend life.

Study
In 2022, epidemiologists from Sichuan University published an analysis of data collected in the 1999-2014 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [NHANES] in Frontiers in Nutrition.

The data included 28,873 adults who did not consume yogurt or other probiotics, 3,539 adults who consumed yogurt, and another 215 adult study participants who took probiotic supplements.

The epidemiologists tracked which study participants died. There were 3,881 in total.

Results
After removing all other lifestyle factors, the researchers found that yogurt consumers reduced their risk of death by 17 percent. Probiotic supplements did not protect against mortality.

When the researchers broke down their data, they found that yogurt's longevity effects were strongest in people over 60 and in women.

Mechanism
The researchers suspect that probiotic organisms in yogurt may explain the effect. They refer to studies suggesting that probiotics reduce the risk of obesity, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Probiotics also inhibit inflammation and also seem to make blood vessels more flexible. Finally, quite some probiotics produce vitamin K.

Conclusion
"Yogurt consumption in diet might be a sensible strategy for reducing the risk of death", write the researchers.
