Magnesium keeps kidneys healthy

The more magnesium you consume daily through regular food, the greater the chance that your kidneys will remain healthy as you age, suggests an epidemiological study published in the Clinical Kidney Journal.

Magnesium keeps kidneys healthy

Study
American nephrologists, affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, analyzed data from 3,075 Americans who were 70-79 years old in 1997-1998. The study participants were part of the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study, in which the researchers were able to follow them for 10 years.

The researchers looked at the relationship between dietary magnesium intake (the researchers had no data on supplementation) and kidney function.

Results
The figure below shows magnesium intake. About a quarter of the study participants consumed more than 350 milligrams of magnesium per day [Q4].

Another quarter of the study participants consumed less than 214 milligrams of magnesium daily [Q1].

When the Americans compared Q4 to Q1 and removed the influence of other factors as best they could, they saw that in the group with the highest magnesium intake, the chance of chronic kidney disease [CKD] was 33 percent lower than in the group with the lowest intake.

In addition, in Q4, the chance of a significant decline in kidney function - a decrease of at least 30 percent of the eGFR - was 46 percent lower than in Q1. You can see this in the table below. Click on it for a larger version.

As kidney function begins to deteriorate, the concentration of fibroblast growth factor-23 [FGF-23] increases. The lower the FGF-23 the researchers found, the greater the protective effect of a higher magnesium intake. This suggests that a high magnesium intake has a primarily preventive effect - and is less protective if the kidneys are already damaged.

Conclusion
"Given that we can augment magnesium intake through supplementation or dietary changes, further studies aimed at studying the impact of increased magnesium intake on chronic kidney disease incidence and progression are warranted", the researchers write.

Magnesium supplement goes in, HDL goes up Survived a stroke? Make sure you get enough magnesium Low magnesium levels will kill you

Magnesium supplement goes in, HDL goes up
Magnesium lowers blood pressure, helps prevent arteriosclerosis - and, according to a recent meta-study, also increases the level of the 'good cholesterol' HDL.

Survived a stroke? Make sure you get enough magnesium
If you have survived a stroke, a high magnesium intake - actually: a magnesium intake that corresponds to the dietary guidelines - reduces your risk of death.

Low magnesium levels will kill you
Men who make sure their magnesium levels are somewhere above average may cut their risk of death in half.
