Lychees for less belly fat
Supplementation with bioactive substances from lychees induces a decrease in fat mass, concludes a small Japanese trial. The effect is not earth-shattering, but makes lychee supplements even more interesting than they already are.
Oligonol is a lychee-based supplement. In animal studies, it inhibits muscle breakdown. In human research, Oliginol increases endurance and also appears to protect cardiovascular health by lowering blood triglycerides.
Oligonol is a product of the Japanese Amino Up. [aminoup.jp] Amino Up did pay for most studies on the biological effects of Oligonol. This also applies to the research we are discussing now.
In 2009, researchers from Hokkaido Information University in Japan and Amino Up published a study in which they got 9 subjects to take 100 milligrams of Oliginol every day for 10 weeks with breakfast, and give another 100 milligrams of Oligonol with dinner. In total, the subjects consumed 200 milligrams of Oligonol per day.
A control group of 9 subjects used a placebo.
Before and after administration, the researchers used scans to determine the subjects' body composition. They saw that the amount of subcutaneous fat did not decrease significantly in the Oligonol group, but noted a significant decrease in the amount of visceral fat in this group.
Supplementation with Oligonol reduced body weight by one percent and reduced the size of the abdomen and waist by several percent.
The effect is not overwhelming, indeed. However, you do wonder what supplementation can do in combination with diet and training.
The researchers suspect that the positive effects of Oligonol on fat reserves have something to do with insulin sensitivity. Oligonol lowered the HOMA-IR. This means that the subjects' cells became more sensitive to insulin.
The Japanese think that polyphenols in Oligonol slow down inflammatory reactions, making the insulin receptor work better.

The common stinging nettle, in Latin Urtica dioica, is edible - and according to American researchers, a super food that burns fat, reduces fat reserves and increases insulin sensitivity.
