High vitamin E levels reduce the risk of gallstones

Vitamin C may protect against gallstones, we wrote a few days ago. What applies to vitamin C, also applies to vitamin E. An attentive reader sent us a German study from 2018.

High vitamin E levels reduce the risk of gallstones

Study
Epidemiologists from the University of Kiel studied a group of 582 elderly residents of the region around Kiel. They used scans to determine whether the study participants had gallstones and analyzed the concentration of alpha and gamma tocopherol in their blood.

Alpha and gamma tocopherol are the two main forms of vitamin E in the German diet. Previously published research had already shown that relatively high concentrations of vitamin E in the blood reduce the risk of gallstones. [Clin Chim Acta. 2004 Nov;349(1-2):157-65.]

High vitamin E levels reduce the risk of gallstones

Results
The more alpha and gamma tocopherol was present in the blood of the study participants, the less often the researchers found gallstones in them. The association between alpha-tocopherol and gallstones was the most convincing.

Vitamin C helps prevent gallstones

Mechanism
The researchers keep open the possibility that the connection is different. Perhaps people with gallstones - or people with a disturbed cholesterol balance - absorb vitamin E less easily.

At the same time, the theory that vitamin E protects against gallstones - perhaps via an antioxidant mechanism - is not so strange at all. Oxidant mechanisms play a role in the formation of gallstones.
