Gram D-chiro inositol gives men more testosterone
We wrote in 2021 that supplementation with a substantial dose of D-chiro-inositol raises testosterone levels and lowers estradiol levels in people over the age of 65. An attentive reader sent us a study in which D-chiro-inositol had a similar effect on the endocrine system of men aged 30-65 years.
Study
Does this imply that D-chiro-inositol supplementation increases testosterone production in men? Italian endocrinologists from the Systems Biology Group Lab attempted to answer that question with a small trial, in which 10 men aged 30-65 with normal, but not very high testosterone levels acted as test subjects.
The men took 2 capsules containing 500 milligrams of D-chiro-inositol daily for a month. In total, the men therefore took one gram of D-chiro-inositol per day.
The Italians did not use a control group.
Results
DHEA levels also rose.
At the same time, the estradiol level fell by an average of 14.4 percent, which was not statistically significant. The estrone level due to supplementation with D-chiro-inositol dropped by 85 percent. This decrease was statistically significant.
Conclusion
"Additional studies with a larger cohort of patients are required to confirm our findings, but also to evaluate the effects on prostate and sperm parameters and to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in D-chiro-inositol activities."
"The complex activities exerted by D-chiro-inositol offer promising opportunities. D-chiro-inositol may be administered at different dosages and length of treatment to treat in men mood disorders or reduced libido associated to low testosterone levels, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, overweight or obesity."
