Coffee makes sedentary lifestyle less deadly
Sitting continuously for hours is not healthy. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases and therefore also the risk of premature death. Drinking coffee protects against this, conclude Chinese researchers who analyzed American data.
Study
Chinese epidemiologists published a study in BMC Public Health in which they analyzed data from 10,639 American adults collected in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2007 and 2018.
The study participants had answered questions about their coffee intake and the number of hours per day they spent sitting.
The researchers determined whether coffee influenced the effects of sitting on the risk of death.
Results
After the researchers had removed other lifestyle factors to the best of their ability, they saw that drinking coffee reduced the risk of death. Drinking coffee reduced the risk of death. The more coffee the study participants drank, the smaller the risk of death.
A sedentary lifestyle had the opposite effect. The more hours the study participants sat each day, the greater their risk of death.

When the Chinese looked at the interaction between coffee and sitting, they discovered that the risk of death was not significantly increased in the group that sat for six hours or more a day but also drank coffee. Coffee therefore protects health in a sedentary lifestyle.
Active substances?
The researchers do not know exactly which substances in coffee are effective against people with a sedentary lifestyle. There are too many different substances in coffee for that. The researchers argue for - you saw it coming - "further research".
