C60 supplements are contaminated

C60 supplements are contaminated
Not all C60 supplements on the market are of good quality. Roughly half of C60 supplements contain contaminants in the form of dubious substances such as toluene and xylene. French researchers report this in Materials.

Study
The researchers bought 4 lots of C60 and analyzed them in their lab. They named their samples S1, S2, S3, and S4.

According to the supplements' manufacturers, the C60 products S1, S2, S3 and S4 had purities of 99.98%, greater than 99.98%, 99.9% and 99.5%, respectively. This may sound good, but these predicates were meaningless, as analysis with GC-MS showed.

Results
S1 was by far the purest product. In S3 and S4 the researchers found a motley collection of contaminants such as toluene and xylene. The substances found were not directly carcinogenic, but they are certainly not healthy.

Conclusion
The researchers find that now that supplement companies already sell C60 and scientists are experimenting with C60, it is important that pure C60 is available.

"In order to perform successful clinical trials, the purity of an active pharmaceutical ingredient must be guaranteed and so does the purity of C60, which is already being sold for human consumption even if no official certified procedure exists to verify its purity," they write.
