Tongkat Ali boosts mosquito sexuality

Asian men have been using Tongkat Ali to stimulate their libido since time immemorial. According to a study published in 2016 in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, Tongkat Ali also increases the male urge to mate in mosquitoes.

Study
The biologist Hamady Dieng, then affiliated with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, experimented with the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Because the mosquito transmits diseases such as dengue and Zika, researchers study the organism. They hope to discover ways to eliminate them and thus prevent disease.

This research is only possible if you can breed mosquitoes properly in labs. Dieng was aware of the growing literature on libido-stimulating herbal extracts such as Tongkat Ali, which increase libido in laboratory animals and humans. The biologist wondered whether there might also be extracts that could encourage mosquitoes to mate with each other.

To gain further clarity, Dieng gave male mosquitoes sugar mixed with an extract of Tongkat Ali. Mosquitoes in a control group were given only sugar. He then brought the males into contact with females.

Results
When the researchers introduced male mosquitoes to female ones, it took an average of 80 seconds for them to mate. If the males had received Tongkat Ali, it took them 25 seconds.

In the experiments the males mated an average of 16 times. If they were given Tongkat Ali, they were able to mount the females 23 times in the same time.

Exposure of males to Tongkat Ali increased the likelihood of mating when males came into contact with females. The figure below shows this.

Conclusion
At first glance, it is of course striking that substances that stimulate the libido in humans have the same effect on mosquitoes. In humans, Tongkat Ali increases testosterone levels, and that could explain the effect - in humans. But insects have no testosterone. So how can Tongkat Ali induce mosquitoes to mate?

Readers of this free web magazine may be less surprised. They know that potatoes grow faster when exposed to the anabolic steroid methandrostenolone.

Another example. Plant hormones such as brassinosteroids have an anabolic effect in laboratory animals, even though animals do not have a brassinosteroid receptor.

And then there are the ecdysteroids in edible plants such as spinach and quinoa. Plants produce ecdysteroids because they imitate an insect version of growth hormone. When insects produce ecdysteroids, they molt or pupate. Insects that molt or pupate do not eat, do not move and are often eaten by birds and mice. According to WADA research, if people ingest the same ecdysteroids, they build more muscle.

Celery, the vegetable of lust? The prosexual effect of saffron Elaeagnus angustifolia: a sex supplement for women

Celery, the vegetable of lust?
Celery is said to contain substances that are released through the skin, spread through the air and subtly change the psychology of women. It sounds extremely improbable, but it is not completely nonsensical.

The prosexual effect of saffron
Saffron supplementation has a prosexual effect, especially regarding sexual arousal.

Elaeagnus angustifolia, a sex supplement for women
Researchers at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran did an experiment with 125 women aged 18-40.
