These two phytochemicals in your diet make melatonin more effective
Melatonin, the hormone that is released during the first stages of healthy sleep, is a very interesting substance. Studies suggest that melatonin has anti-estrogenic, fat-reducing, muscle-building and life-prolonging effects. An Indian biochemist has discovered seems that those effects of melatonin may become stronger if you ingest a relatively large amount of caffeic acid and quercetin, for example through a diet with a lot of vegetables and fruit.
Study
All three substances - and analogues thereof - are present in plant foods.
Results
Then Jana administered orally melatonin to rats. The dose was 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. The human equivalent of that dose is in the size of several tens of milligrams. In the EU supplement companies are not allowed to sell products with such quantities.
Some rats also received caffeic acid, quercetin or a combination of these two substances. The human equivalent of the doses used corresponds to the amounts that a normal person can consume through vegetables, fruit, herbs and supplements. Jana measured the concentration of melatonin in the rats' blood.
