Drastic increase in endurance capacity by inhaling mint oil and orange oil
If athletes inhale mint oil or orange oil five minutes before they start training, their endurance capacity increases dramatically, write Palestinian researchers at An-Najah National University, Nablus, in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. The Palestinians suspect that the etheric oils in mint and orange improve the lungs' functioning.
Study
The oil had been extracted from the leaves of Mentha spicata, which is spearmint. The students got 0.02 ml mint oil per kg bodyweight. The oil was mixed with 5 ml saline solution.
Ten other students inhaled oil from the blossom of Citrus sinensis, the orange tree.
Results
The researchers then got the participants to inhale as much air as possible on one occasion, and then to exhale as much air as they could. The amount of exhaled air is what scientists call the forced expiratory volume. The bigger that volume is, the more oxygen the lungs can inhale. The researchers discovered that inhaling mint or orange oil increased the forced expiratory volume.
Conclusion
"However, our conclusion and the generalisability of our results should be interpreted with caution due to small sample size and lack of control groups, randomization or masking. No control groups have been proposed in order to ensure that the intervention reaches the maximum number of students agreed to participate."
"We recommend further investigations to explain the mechanism of actions for these two essential oils on exercise performance and respiratory gas exchange parameters."
