Combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine outperforms creatine nitrate or creatine monohydrate
Creatine nitrate is a chemical compound formed between creatine and nitric acid. According to some sponsored studies, creatine nitrate works a better than regular creatine, but Serbian researchers suspect that the combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine is even more effective.
On three different occasions, the researchers, who are affiliated with the University of Novi Sad, gave 10 men creatine supplements. On one occasion the subjects received 3 grams of creatine monohydrate [CRM] every day for 5 days. On another occasion the men received 3 grams of creatine nitrate [CN] daily, and on yet another occasion 3 grams of creatine nitrate plus 3 grams of creatinine [CN-CRN].
Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatinine, which can, however, turn back into creatine.
The first 2 hours after taking the first dose of the three different supplements, the researchers monitored the concentration of creatine in the men's blood. Creatine nitrate increased this concentration more than creatine monohydrate - but the combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine worked even better.
In the first hours after ingestion, the combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine increased the concentration of creatinine in the blood. That was hardly surprising.
After 5 days of supplementation, the researchers determined the amount of creatine in the men's muscles. Creatine nitrate caused a greater increase than creatine monohydrate, but supplementation with the combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine increased creatine concentration even more.
A pity that the researchers did not look into supplementation with creatine nitrate and regular creatine.
In three of the ten test subjects, the creatine concentration in the muscles did not change as a result of supplementation with creatine monohydrate. Two out of ten subjects did not respond to creatine nitrate supplementation. All subjects, however, responded to supplementation with the combination of creatine nitrate and creatinine.
"Short-term supplementation with creatine nitrate plus creatinine appears to superiorly affect creatine levels in the circulation and skeletal muscle in comparison with either creatine nitrate or creatine monohydrate, thus advancing this experimental formulation as a preferred alternative to traditional creatine formulations", write the researchers.
"Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of creatine nitrate plus creatinine performance needs to be further elucidated, and more well-designed long-term studies in both athletic and clinical environment are required."
