Cherry extract makes endurance athletes thirteen percent faster
Endurance athletes who take a capsule containing cherry extract every day for a week before a race can boost their speed by thirteen percent. American researchers at Texas A&M University write about this in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.
The researchers divided 27 trained endurance athletes into two groups, and gave one group a placebo for 10 days and the other group a supplement containing 480 mg cherry extract. The extract they tested is available on the market as CherryPure. It's produced by the American company Shoreline Fruit [shorelinefruit.com] and - yes, you guessed it - the company financed the study.
On day seven of the experiment, the subjects ran a half marathon, 21.1 km.
The athletes who had taken the cherry supplement finished the half marathon in 103 minutes. The placebo group took 118 minutes.
After completing the half marathon the total amount of antioxidants [TAS] in the blood increased faster in the cherry group than in the placebo group.
The concentration of inflammatory factors - such as interleukin 1, 2 and 6 - in the blood decreased faster in the cherry group.
The combined anti-inflammatory effect and antioxidant effect of the cherry extract reduced muscle breakdown. The researchers found less urea [protein waste products] in the blood of the cherry group.
"Short-term supplementation of Montmorency powdered tart cherries surrounding an endurance challenge attenuated markers of muscle catabolism, reduced immune and inflammatory stress, better maintained redox balance, and increased performance in aerobically trained individuals", the researchers concluded.
We, the ignorant compilers of this free webzine, have our reservations about this study. The supplement reduced the half-marathon time of the subjects by an epic thirteen percent. That's not just an awful lot. It's an unbelievably high amount.
