Carrot juice puts free radicals on a leash
Drinking 2 glasses of carrot juice every day reduces the damage caused by free oxygen radicals in your body by 57 percent.
Study
In 2011, researchers from Texas A&M University-Kingsville published a small human study in Nutrition Journal, in which 17 subjects drank 470 milliliters of carrot juice every day for 3 months. That means 2 glasses of carrot juice per day.
There was no control group.
Results
After the subjects had drunk carrot juice for 3 months, the concentration of malondialdehyde in their blood had decreased by 57 percent. Malondialdehyde is formed when aggressive oxygen molecules attack membranes and fatty substances in the body. The more malondialdehyde circulating in your body, the greater the damage free radicals do to your body.
Carrot juice increased the antioxidant effect in the blood by 27 percent.
These are significant effects, greater than you find in the majority of comparable studies in which test subjects received supplements with vitamin C and vitamin E. For example, in a recent trial in which subjects took a daily supplement containing 500 milligrams of vitamin C, the concentration decreased by 10 percent. Carrot juice had no effect on body composition, blood pressure and glucose and cholesterol balance.
