Beetroot for bone strength

A diet with relatively many sources of natural nitrate, such as beetroot, arugula, lettuce and spinach, increases the concentration of nitric oxide [NOx] in the blood. Athletes are now fully aware that such a diet can improve physical performance. A nitrate-rich diet may also keep bones strong as the years go by, suggests Japanese research.

Study
In February 2023, Japanese researchers published an epidemiological study involving 871 women. The researchers used data collected since 1993 in the Nagano Cohort Study.

The average study participant was about 67 years old when the project started, and could be followed for almost 9 years.

When the study began, the researchers took samples of the women's urine and blood. In the course of the study, 267 women broke a bone.

Results
The more NOx was present in the women's blood, the lower their risk of a bone fracture.

Mechanism
The more NOx was present in the women's blood, the less type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptides [NTx] was in their urine. NTx is a marker for bone breakdown.

In 1994, American researchers published an in vitro study in PNAS in which they showed that blocking the enzymes that generate NOx in bone tissue increases the activity of bone-degrading osteoclasts. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 1994; 91:3569-73.] NOx apparently inhibits bone breakdown by inhibiting osteoclasts.

Betaine may make not only muscles but also bone tissue stronger
Betaine, a bodybuilding supplement, which has been shown in small studies to have an anabolic effect on muscle tissue, may also help to strengthen bones.

Heavy strength training increases bone mass in osteoporosis sufferers
Post-menopausal women who suffer from osteoporosis or osteopenia [the precursor to osteoporosis] can stop bone density decline and even reverse the trend by doing weight training.

Gelatine-based Fortibone makes bones stronger
Gelatine producer Gelita has put a gelatin-based hydrolyzate on the market, which should protect better against osteoporosis than regular gelatin. Sponsored study.
