After heart attack, Q10 makes the blood vessels healthier

If you have survived a heart attack and do not have plans to move to a better world in the short term, supplementation with Q10 may be an interesting option for you. According to a small trial, published by Nutrition Scientists at Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2014, a daily dose of 200 milligrams Q10 makes the blood vessels of heart patients healthier.

Study
The researchers divided 52 heart patients aged 35-70 years, all of whom had a heart attack, into two groups. For 12 weeks, one half swallowed 200 milligrams Q10 daily, while the other half a placebo.

The researchers used 100 milligram capsules from Health Burst. The study participants took 2 of them, spread throughout the day.

If the heart patients had been prescribed beta-blockers, anticoagulants and statins, they would continue to use their medication during the trial.

Results
In both groups the blood pressure dropped equally during the trial.

In both groups the levels of the 'bad cholesterol' LDL dropped. But in the Q10 group, the 'good cholesterol' HDL level increased by 25 percent, while it remained the same inthe placebo group. As a result, Q10 improved the LDL/HDL ratio. This ratio is an important marker and determinant of cardiovascular health.

Q10 also reduced the concentration of the coagulation factor fibrinogen in the blood. A healthy fibrinogen level fluctuates between 1.5 and 2.8 grams per liter. When the trial started, both groups had unhealthy high fibrinogen levels, but after 12 weeks, the concentration in the Q10 group was in the healthy range.

Conclusion
"This study provided evidence for anti-atherogenic action of CoQ10, which is exerted through improving the endothelial function of conduit arteries", schrijven de onderzoekers. "The results of this double-blinded randomized clinical trial demonstrate that intake of CoQ10 (200 mg/d) for 12 weeks would lead to significant increase in serum HDL-C and significant decrease in LDL-C/HDL-C ratio [...] in patients with myocardial infarction."

"The rise in the serum HDL-C initiates cholesterol efflux and facilitates the removal of excess cholesterol from the arteries and delivers it to liver for being removed through reverse cholesterol transport pathway. The significant decrease[...] in LDL-C/HDL-C ratio [...] in our study [...] [was] a favorable result for decreasing the CVD risk."
