Three ways to prevent hearing loss
If you get lots of exercise, limit your fat mass and also keep your waist slim, you'll reduce the chance of having hearing loss as you age. This emerged from an epidemiological study published by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston in 2013 in the American Journal of Medicine.
Study
For this study the researchers looked specifically at hearing problems that the women reported in 2009.
Results
A second factor was waist measurement. The smaller the waist – read: the less abdominal fat the women had - the less likely they were to have hearing problems. The protective effect of a slim waist remained after the researchers had filtered out the effect of BMI.
And finally, physical exercise also had a protective effect. The more the women exercised, the less the likelihood of developing hearing problems. And that relationship remained intact after the researchers had filtered out the effect of BMI and waist circumference.
Explanation
Conclusion
"These findings may provide insight into potential mechanisms that underlie acquired hearing loss and suggest possible strategies for prevention."
