Algae supplement activates stem cells in damaged liver, pancreas and heart muscle

Olimpiq StemXCell, a supplement made by the Hungarian Crystal Institute, repairs damaged tissues in mice. From animal studies, researchers at the Pecs University of Sciences discovered that the supplement stimulates stem cells to repair damaged tissue.

The most important ingredient in Olimpiq StemXCell is an extract of the 'green-blue alga' Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. There's a reason for the quotation marks: Aphanizomenon flos-aquae is actually a cyanobacteria, not an alga. Most of the strains of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae in the world are poisonous, and contain toxins that damage the liver and the nerves. In the US, companies harvest a harmless kind of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae from Upper Klamath Lake. This is added to supplements and has been hailed as a super-food.

One supplement that contains Aphanizomenon flos-aquae is StemEnhance, which is said to activate stem cells. [US Patent 6,814,961] [Med Hypotheses. 2002 Oct;59(4):422-8.]

The researchers tested a Hungarian variant of StemEnhance for their article. Besides Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, the supplement contained chlorophyll, Cimicifuga racemosa (aka Black cohosh), fucoidan extracted from brown algae, and extract of the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum, extracts of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa and Lyceum barbarum (aka goji berry).

Mice and rats were given the supplement mixed with their food for 10 days, at a dose of 7.14 mg/kg/day. That's the equivalent of 500 mg/day for a human weighing 70 kg.

In a preliminary experiment the researchers gave the mice an injection of CCl4, which damages the liver, on the same day as the supplementation started. The figure below shows that the weight of the liver at the end of the supplementation period was greater in the mice that had been given Olimpiq StemXCell in their food than that of the animals that had been given ordinary food [Control].

In another experiment, the researchers started with a 10-day course of StemXCell, after which they injected the rats with isoproterenol, which induced a heart attack. After the injection the researchers stopped giving the rats the supplement. After 8 weeks they saw that the hearts of the rats that had had Aphanizomenon flos-aquae were able to pump more blood per heartbeat. The figure above shows this. The vertical axis shows the ejection fraction.

In a third experiment, on the day that StemXCell supplementation started, the researchers gave the rats an injection of alloxan, a poison that destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In this case the rats were given the supplement for 5 weeks. The figure below shows that StemXCell kept the glucose level down.

Olimpiq StemXCell speeds up tissue repair in the liver, heart and pancreas, the researchers conclude. If this is the case, then power athletes should be able to build up more muscle tissue with a supplement like this. Strength training not only builds muscle mass by making existing muscle cells bigger, but also by increasing the number of muscle cells in the muscle tissue. The new cells started life as stem cells.

A wide range of legal – like NO boosters – and illegal muscle strengtheners – like trenbolone – stimulate the conversion of stem cells into muscle cells.

By the way, there's something strange about Olimpiq StemXCell. When StemEnhance was launched, critical scientists said they were worried that, if the product worked, it might activate not only stem cells but also cancer cells. [the-scientist.com 15th May 2007] The composition of StemXCell would suggest that the manufacturers have taken this criticism seriously. Fucoidan, goji and Ganoderma lucidum are all cancer cell inhibitors.

Hmm...
