A little bit of physical activity drastically increases the survival chances of breast cancer patients
Walking for half an hour 5 days a week will give you the minimum amount of exercise that sports scientists say you need to stay healthy. No, that's not much. But it's enough to dramatically increase the survival rates of women with breast cancer - and significantly reduce the chances of their disease returning.
Study
The researchers knew how much the women exercised before, during and 1 and 2 years after their chemotherapy. This enabled them to determine whether the women were meeting the minimum amount of exercise that scientists believe people need to stay healthy: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
Results
For example, in the table below you can see that, compared with the study participants who did not meet the exercise guidelines before, during and after their treatment, the study participants who did exercise enough before, during and 2 years after their treatment had a 55 percent lower risk of their illness. Their chance of dying was 68 percent less.

"This is particularly encouraging given that patients and survivors may be overwhelmed by the most current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommending 150-300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity recreational physical activity or 3 days per week of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity structured aerobic exercise for cancer survivors."
