Grape Seed Extract protects against fatty liver disease

The most common liver disease on the planet is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] - commonly referred to as 'fatty liver' in everyday parlance. Fatty liver starts relatively harmlessly, but can develop into a serious condition. Grape Seed Extract to the rescue.

Study
NAFLD is usually the result of a lifestyle with too little exercise and too many unhealthy foods. By some estimates, 1 in 5 people will eventually develop NAFLD.

There is no adequate medical treatment for fatty liver, but in theory supplementation with anti-inflammatory natural polyphenols could slow down the process. So doctors at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in Iran conducted a small experiment on people with fatty liver - or steatosis, as the condition is also known.

The researchers divided 30 patients with steatosis into 2 groups. The patients in the control group took one gram of vitamin C daily for 3 months, the patients in the experimental group took capsules with 100 milligrams of Grape Seed Extract daily.

We cannot determine from the publication how many capsules the test subjects received daily. Anyway, if we had known that, we still didn't know much. The researchers made their Grape Seed Extract themselves and do not give any specifications about the concentration of active substances in their extract.

Sigh.

The subjects used their supplements in addition to their regular medication.

Results
Supplementation with Grape Seed Extract led to a significant decrease in the concentration of the liver enzyme ALT in the blood of the test subjects. ALT is a marker for liver damage in steatosis.

Before, during and on the last day of the administration of the supplements, the researchers used scans to determine the degree of fatty liver. They saw an improvement in the users of Grape Seed Extract. That's what the table above says.

Conclusion
"The beneficial effect of using Grape Seed Extract has been described in this study, which may favor consideration of the use of Grape Seed Extract, along with life style modifications", the researchers write. "A longer duration of treatment with Grape Seed Extract may render better results."

Three capsules of Grape Seed Extract protect muscles during extreme strength training
If athletes give their muscles a hard blow during unusually heavy strength training sessions, Grape Seed Extract supplementation can considerably limit the damage to their muscle tissue.
