DNP overdose kills bodybuilder

A 24-year-old bodybuilder died in the German town of Munster after taking an overdose of the illegal slimming drug DNP, reported the daily newspaper Westfaelische Nachrichten. The bodybuilder died in hospital after going there himself with his girlfriend. The man felt unwell after taking 4 g of the substance: a massive amount.

The effective dose for DNP lies somewhere between a few milligrams and 3 mg per kilo bodyweight per day. Long-term use of even these dosages can lead to health damage.

DNP disrupts energy metabolism in the body's cells. The molecule punches holes in the cell membrane, so the cell can no longer store energy and lets it 'leak' out in the form of heat. This leads to an increase in the body’s energy use – and a deadly fever can be the result.

The German bodybuilder arrived on time at the hospital. But because he didn't dare tell the doctors what substance he had been taking, the doctors lost valuable time and the man died.
