Lab tests: 24 higenamine supplements
If you use weight loss supplements, energy pills or pre-workout formulas with higenamine, then you really do not know how much of this substance you're putting into you body. Maybe nothing at all, maybe more than 100 milligrams. This is evident from an analysis of 24 supplements by Pieter Cohen of the University of Harvard and researchers from the Dutch RIVM.
Higenamine
Higenamine is a stimulant, which according to in vitro research interacts with the adrenergic beta-2 receptor - just like terbutaline and salbutamol. In theory, administration of higenamine could lead to a shift in body composition towards less fat and more muscles.
We do not know whether this is the case. It has never been studied. That did not stop the supplement industry from putting higenamine in supplements. Officially these supplements contain plant extracts with higenamine, but the higenamine in supplements is almost always of synthetic origin.
Higenamine is on the doping list. Athletes who use supplements with higenamine can therefore get into trouble. [usada.org March 23, 2018] [usada.org August 16, 2017]
We don't know if higenamine is dangerous. Cohen managed to get his hands on Chinese human studies, in which higenamine in people increased blood pressure and accelerated the heart rate, but in these studies researchers administered higenamine in small quantities by slow drip infusion. It's hard to tell form these studies what the effect of oral dosages would be.
Results
The amount of active substance in the supplements varied considerably. In some supplements, the researchers found nothing or virtually nothing, but they also analyzed a supplement that contained more than 100 milligrams of higenamine per recommended daily maximum dose.
The products' labels were inaccurate. They often didn't mention dosages, and if they did they turned out to be wrong.
The table below is also simplified. The integral version can be found here.

Conclusion
"We're urging competitive and amateur athletes, as well as general consumers, to think twice before consuming a product that contains higenamine", says co-author John Travis in a press release. [sciencedaily.com September 6, 2018]
"Beyond the doping risk for athletes, some of these products contain extremely high doses of a stimulant with unknown safety and potential cardiovascular risks when consumed. What we've learned from the study is that there is often no way for a consumer to know how much higenamine is actually in the product they are taking."

Methylsynephrine is not a naturally occurring substance, but a medicine that the pharmaceutical industry has now rejected because it was too risky. The substance is found in a number of slimming supplements.
