Terbutaline tabs for a month: gain 2 kilos of muscle, lose 1 kilo of fat
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen discovered that the asthma medicine terbutaline, administered by an inhaler, increases muscle mass by a kilo. That's what we wrote 2 days ago. In 2015, the same researchers published a study in which they had volunteers take a large amount of terbutaline tablets. The body recompositioning effects were even more impressive.
Study
The researchers divided the men into 2 groups. For 4 weeks one group received a placebo, and the other terbutaline.
The maximum medical dose for adults is 15 milligrams of terbutaline per day, divided over three intakes. The researchers gave their test subjects 2-3 fold of that dose: for every 30 kg of body weight the subjects took 5 milligrams of terbutaline sulphate every day, twice a day. The researchers used Bricanyl Retard from AstraZeneca.
Results
During a cylcing sprint of 30 seconds, the subjects in the terbutaline group [TER] could develop more power after 4 weeks. That means they got faster. This did not happen in the placebo group [PLA].
The lean body mass [say: the muscle mass] in the terbutaline group increased by two kilos compared to the placebo group. At the same time, the fat mass in the terbutaline group decreased by 1 kilo compared to the placebo group.
In muscle cells, taken form the men's legs, the researchers found an increase in the muscle proteins myosin heavy chain I and myosin heavy chain II in the terbutaline group.
In the muscle cells, terbutaline had no effect on the production of the muscle growth-inhibiting protein myostatin. However, the drug did increase the production of follistatin. Follistatin inactivates myostatin.
