Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a mysterious condition. It is not clear what causes fibromyalgia, it is not possible to diagnose fibromyalgia objectively and there are no medications that cure fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia have chronic pain in muscles and connective tissue. In addition, they often suffer from stiffness, fatigue and sleep disorders and mood swings.

Study
Turkish doctors, affiliated with the Istanbul Fizik Tedavi Rehabilitasyon Egitim ve Arastirma Hastanesi, gave 180 women aged 18-70 years with fibromyalgia a weekly supplement with 50,000 IU vitamin D3 for 12 weeks.

There was no placebo group.

Results
After 12 weeks of supplementation, the subjects reported 33 percent less pain [VAS] than before the supplementation started. The test subjects initially gave their pain a rating of 7.7, but after 12 weeks this was only 5.1.

The researchers had the subjects complete a questionnaire [FIQ] before and at the end of the supplementation period. Doctors use this to try to estimate the severity of fibromyalgia. The minimum score on the list is 0, the maximum score is 80.

After the women received vitamin D3 for 12 weeks, they reported that the severity of their symptoms had decreased by 20 percent.

Low vitamin D levels
Most women had too little vitamin D in their blood before supplementation started. As many as 77.8 percent of them were eligible for extra vitamin D. The researchers do not say whether women with an initial vitamin D deficiency responded better to supplementation.
