Quercetin analogs provide just as much protection against viruses as quercetin itself
Quercetin may be able to protect against viruses, this website reported several times. What applies to quercetin, also applies to all kinds of quercetin analogs, such as rutin, quercitrin and isorhamnetin, Brazilian researchers discovered. That's good news for anyone who wants to improve his immune system, but is reluctant to take supplements. Quercetin in its free form is mainly found in supplements. In regular foods such as vegetables, fruit and herbs, you will mainly find quercetin analogs.
Study
In these studies, researchers infected laboratory animals with viruses - usually with human influenza viruses - and subsequently determined whether supplementation with quercetin or its analogues had a positive effect on the course of the infection.
Results
The tables and figures below are reduced in size. Click it for a larger version.
Supplementation with quercitrin, quercetin and isorhamnetin reduced risk of death.
In another 3 animal studies, the researchers looked at the amount of viruses in the lungs of the laboratory animals. When the Brazilians aggregated the results of those studies, they found that supplementation with quercetin analogues reduced the viral load.
The above suggests quercetin and its analogs not only protect individuals from viral infections, but may also make people who are already infected with a virus less likely to transmit their infection.
Conclusion
"Furthermore, due to their lack of severe side effects and low cost, quercetin may be developed as a safer and cheaper option for the prophylaxis of seasonal or emerging respiratory viral infections, helping to control outbreaks, epidemics, and/or pandemics."
