Diet containing beetroot, arugula and other nitrate sources protects against heart failure
We recently wrote about the mild positive effects of a diet with a relatively high amount of nitrate on muscle strength and bone strength. A diet high in natural nitrate may also reduce the risk of heart failure.
Study
The concentration of nitrate in the urine give a good idea of the intake of nitrate. Nitrates are mainly found in vegetables such as arugula, beets and spinach, and act as a precursor of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide makes blood vessels more flexible, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow to the cells.
Results
After brushing off the possible influence of a number of other lifestyle factors with statistics, they saw that the risk of heart failure was 63 percent lower in the group with the highest nitrate intake than in the group with the lowest nitrate intake.
In the table above [click for a larger version] the researchers split their data by age and gender. Men and individuals under the age of 60 in particular seem to benefit from a diet that is relatively high in nitrate.
Wu and Tian also looked at other heart conditions, such as angina pectoris and heart attacks. There they found positive trends, but no protective effects with a statistical significance that would make beet and spinach growers happy.
Conclusion
