Diet containing beetroot, arugula and other nitrate sources protects against heart failure

We recently wrote about the mild positive effects of a diet with a relatively high amount of nitrate on muscle strength and bone strength. A diet high in natural nitrate may also reduce the risk of heart failure.

We recently wrote about the mild positive effects of a diet with a relatively high amount of nitrate on muscle strength and bone strength. A diet high in natural nitrate may also reduce the risk of heart failure.

Study
Zhuo Wu and Ting Tian, two researchers from Nanjing Medical University in China, used data collected in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The Americans had measured the concentration of nitrate in the urine of a total of 14,894 study participants, and asked them whether they had a cardiovascular disease.

The concentration of nitrate in the urine give a good idea of the intake of nitrate. Nitrates are mainly found in vegetables such as arugula, beets and spinach, and act as a precursor of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide makes blood vessels more flexible, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow to the cells.

Results
Wu and Tian divided the study participants into 4 equal groups according to the concentration of nitrate in their urine [Q1 = lowest concentration; Q4 highest concentration].

After brushing off the possible influence of a number of other lifestyle factors with statistics, they saw that the risk of heart failure was 63 percent lower in the group with the highest nitrate intake than in the group with the lowest nitrate intake.

In the table above [click for a larger version] the researchers split their data by age and gender. Men and individuals under the age of 60 in particular seem to benefit from a diet that is relatively high in nitrate.

Wu and Tian also looked at other heart conditions, such as angina pectoris and heart attacks. There they found positive trends, but no protective effects with a statistical significance that would make beet and spinach growers happy.

Conclusion
"A raised intake of dietary nitrate may help resist the occurrence of congestive heart failure in particular populations", summarize the researchers.

Should heart failure patients be prescribed Q10? Vitamin D protects against heart failure Q10 and selenium supplements halve chance of fatal cardiovascular disease

Should heart failure patients be prescribed Q10?
Patients with heart failure benefit from supplementation with Q10, concludes the largest and most carefully conducted meta-study to date. Q10 improves heart function and survival.

Vitamin D protects against heart failure
According to this study, a serious vitamin D deficiency increases the chance of heart failure by a whopping factor 12.

Q10 and selenium supplements halve chance of fatal cardiovascular disease
The day before yesterday we wrote about a Swedish human study in which daily supplementation with 200 mcg selenium and 200 mg Q10 raised IFG-1 levels.
