Animal study: probiotic Lactobacillus casei CRL431 inhibits metastatic breast cancer
Study
4T1 cells resemble aggressive human breast cancer cells. When those cancer types are discovered, they have often already spread throughout the body. Oncologists remove the tumors with surgery and try to fight the remaining cancer cells with medication and radiation. This usually slows down the course of the disease, but a cure is often not possible. The animal study was intended to simulate this condition.
The researchers gave half of the mice regular milk, and the other half milk with Lactobacillus casei CRL431, a probiotic bacterium that has been on the market for years. According to previously published studies, Lactobacillus casei CRL431 activates the immune system.
The immune system is the most important line of defense against cancer. Immune cells kill cancer cells. The researchers hoped that administration of Lactobacillus casei CRL431 could delay the course of the disease.

Conclusion
"The importance of the host immune response against metastasis was observed and the results obtained suggest that modulation of some immune populations in the lungs by milk fermented with Lactobacillus casei CRL431 could be a strategy to fight against tumour cells locally in the metastatic sites."
"However, even though the benefits associated with Lactobacillus casei CRL431 were reported for healthy and immunosuppressed hosts, it will be important to evaluate the efficacy of milk fermented with Lactobacillus casei CRL431 in metastasis models after surgery together with drugs used as conventional treatments."
